A belt isn't necessary. But as McMurdo mentions, a belt does create a good visual break and there are a lot of choices, including some inexpensive ones listed above. If money is tight, I think many would agree it's better to invest in a proper sporran, then add a belt later when your budget allows.

I too wear me belt as an accessory not as a necessity, I always understood that the belt was not suppose ta hold the kilt up. I use it ta hold me sporran, belt pouch, dagger,flask pouch, etc.

The original philabeg was a piece of cloth wrapped around your waist and the belt held it up. My pet theory is that the Victorians wore the belt to look traditional to their eyes, even though their kilts had buckles, and now people copy the Victorians to look traditional, including non-functional things that they wore to look like someone from a period that they thought was old enough to be traditional back then.

All the belts I wear with my kilts are purely decorative. I often forgo wearing a belt when Scottish Country Dancing for comfort.

I like the way they look and that is the sole reason I wear them.

I dont wear a belt if I'm wearing any waistcoat - and even then it's just an accessory.
I've got far too many buckles too!

I never go out without a belt--kilted or no. I am just old school enough to think that a gentleman should wear a belt. And, I really think that a kilted outfit looks better with a belt.

Having said that, I would advise a cheaper belt from anywhere you can find one for casual wear. A 2" minimum if you can find one. Think bargain basement, Goodwill, etc. For very casual daywear, try the Army/Navy store. A web belt looks pretty cool.

But . . .start in saving your money, maybe only 10-15 dollars a month if that's all you can afford. But keep saving until you can afford a good belt from Okonee Leatherworks. http://oconeeleatherworks.com/

If you need belt to keep your kilt up - the kilt is likely the wrong size. When wearing a tartan kilt I always wear a belt. As others have said, a belt makes a nice visual break in the overall look of a kilted gent.

As it was previously said ; you don't have to wear a belt. They just look nice.

If you choose to do so, please avoid wearing a fancy dress rectangular belt with a daywear outfit (unless you’re in a pipe band).

Never wear a belt with a waistcoat.

I'm sure Sandy would have posted by had he not been on the road. I don't think I've ever seen him wear a belt. I'm considering going sans belt next weekend at Stone Mountain. It doesn't really serve the purpose it was intended for. We'll see how it goes.
