Always wear a 2 in. belt. Tighten kilt to loose fit and take up slack with belt. Takes stress off kilt buckles. I use belt loops for both belt and sporran belt.

A lot of the more traditionally minded rarely if ever wear a kilt belt, especially for daywear.
I myself can go either way. I often wear a belt but then again, often not. :-)
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing the kilt, sporran, Argyle jacket & neck tie, and NO belt for day wear. That is a very traditional look.
On the other hand, those who argue that the belt "finishes" the look and provides a visual break between the bottom and top of the outfit also have a valid point.
As I said, I can go either way. I would say that when I get dressed in the morning whether I choose to wear a belt or not depends 50% on the particular outfit I'm wearing, and 50% on my mood that day.
Looking through my photo album for examples, I am surprised to only find two pictures of me without a belt (not counting photos where I am wearing a waistcoat or sweater), and in both I'm holding a baby chicken! :-) |

Half of my casual -wear sporrans hang on the belt using hangers or slings, but I wear the belt regardless to finish the look, so to speak. I don't wear the belt when wearing a waistcoat.

This is an example showing how superfluous would have been a belt of any kind.
Notice how the tip of the tie is pointing toward the central apron line. This would have been waisted by the belt.
Best,
Robert

I have a nice silver buckle in the pipeline, though, which will have my crest on it, but I don't think it will get much wear.

Best,
Robert | Robert, your tie is off center; does this indicate that you are standing on the side of a hill?

I generally wear a belt. I do not wear a belt if I am wearing a waistcoat (vest) as part of my outfit. I also pass on the belt if I'm kilted while doing yardwork, ect.

I don't think a belt is at all necessary... but I must say that I do like the way it looks. I won't wear one around the house, but I generally wear one when I go out and about. To sound like a broken record dittoing what so many others have said, I think that it provides a nice break. That's a heckuva lot of tartan, and the belt creates a nice visual display.
That said, I do rather like the image Robert posted just above Maybe it just depends a lot on the individual kilt and how you wear it.
As for finding an inexpensive one, check out Target. I've seen some belts there (particularly in the Women's accessories section) that have given me pause... luckily I couldn't justify a new belt

With tartan kilts I almost always will wear a sporran, however never with Utilikilts or other contemporary kilts that come with pockets.

No, more seriously, in this actual photo everything is centered exept the lower part of my shirt.... got twisted in the kilting process I guess.
Best,
Robert
