Leather free sporran

I'm a vegetarian (for ethical, not dietary reasons) and I've been trying to find a leather free sporran. I'm open to either sythetic lether alternatives or simply buying (or making) one from cloth. Any suggerstions? Is there such thing as a cloth sporran? I'm getting a Philabeg from USAKilts, I intend to wear it to ren faires as well as for every day use, but I think I'll only be using the sporran for the faires, as I have a perfectly good breif case I carry the rest of the time.

You could very easily make a passable plain day sporran out of a good quality "pleather". Most fabric stores will have a selection of various colours, or you could probably find some online. You might have to sew two thicknesses together for some parts, or back the material with something stiffer, for some parts.

Welcome. I too, am a vegetarian, for dietary reasons, that is rapidly sliding in to ethical reasons as well.

There are lots of folk around here that make GOOD cloth sporrans. Like Jeff from Pittsburgh Kilts. I am pretty sure you could talk somebody in to making a snazzy sporran for you at a reasonable price.

Not being crafty myself I've been hoping the growing interest in kilts would spin-off, among other things, canvas sporrans.
Available in several earthy colors.
Pleather leaves me cold.
Heres hoping.

You might look into a maille sporran. Ask around at http://www.chainmailleboard.com/ You might want to line the inside with cloth of some sort to keep anything extremely narrow from poking through the mesh.

Chainmail would be a BAD idea. Chains are a bad idea. They rub and wear out your kilt.

Friction = Bad.

I'm still new to kilts so I'm not exactly sure how they react to friction but well made maille (or even chains for that matter) should not rub. It should be smoother than cloth and should not have any burrs.
