Looking for peasant / viking style shirts

I bought my first Utilikilt in January, two more a month latter, and am looking at getting a traditional in the Washington State tartan for more formal occasions.

I would like to get something along the lines of a medieval peasant shirt (example) or a viking style shirt (example) to go with my Utilikilts. I've been wearing T-shirts, which is ok but not really my style; I wear button down causuals when I'm in pants, but those don't look right with a kilt.

I have been able to find suppliers of cheap theater-quality stuff, and tailors who can make what I want if I have lots of money and can wait until September. I'm hoping someone might have leads on where to find decent shirts that won't cost a mint and which I can get before the end of summer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try RenStore, House Morningstar, or Garb the World.

They've all got good selections, and I'll be brutally honest - if you can find a good quality (i.e., a "working" shirt, not a "costume" piece) "pirate shirt" or "Jacobite shirt" for under $40, I'd really like to know where.

I haven't bought any in a very long time - it's handy having a pretty lady in the house who can run a sewing machine. I have, however, seen most of the goods from House Morningstar and RenStore first-hand.

If you don't find anything online, see about getting in touch with your local SCA or ECW (English Civil War) folks, and see if you can beg, borrow, trade, barter, or buy clothes from someone who's better with a needle than you are.

You can also try for the larger RenFaires and SCA events, and check with merchants who're selling. You can occasionally get really good deals from the SCAdian merchants depending on the economy, since they don't want to tote all the stuff back home and store it some more. They want to sell it.

    Excellent suggestions!

Thanks for the links, they look promising. I will look up some SCAers, too. I used to be a member, many years ago; I'm embarassed I didn't think of them.

HERE is an offering from the Scottish Tartans Museum, operated by one of our members.

I purchased one of these and was pleasantly surprised at the fit and quality. Many companies sell a shirt with an over-sized sleeve and label it a 'Jacobite' shirt. This one has the full traditional cut.

Here's one from Barkertown Sutlers in white cotton for $35. I also hear that Missy is excellent to deal with.
