I have the exact same problem.

I ordered my first (and only for now) kilt with belt loops to fit my standard belts. This was before I found XMarks so now I know better.
I do wear a 1.75" wide "pants" belt with a sporran strap and I think it looks OK. As soon as I can afford it I will be getting a more approriate belt in both black and brown.

I myself prefer the larger belt with my kilt, but again that is just my humble opinion. I use both the sporran chain and occassionally the sporran hangers.

You have to decide what works best for you. Like others have said the belt is not there to hold the kilt UP!

When I first received my tank, I only had a 1.75 in. belt and felt it looked very wrong, so I went out and purchased a 3 in. work belt from Home Depot and dyed it. I feel it looks much better and will post a picture when I get one. In the mean time, her is a link to a picture utilizing my narrow belt...

I wear wide belts because I think they look better. I think you should too. But don't let the belt problem stop you from wearing a kilt.

As part of the stimulus package, I've put in for a federal grant to start the kilt police. Everyone beware.

Narrow belts look funny with a kilt.

Do the mirror test: If you put it on, look in the mirror, and it looks funny, change something.

Or, do the woman test: Put it on, have a woman look at you, and if you're still wearing it in 5 minutes, change something.

I think that a narrow belt looks out of proportion when worn with the kilt. Those of us of a more substantial figure require, from an aesthetic point of view, a belt of 2 to 3 inches wide.

I think no belt at all looks better than a skinny one. Just my humble opinion.

I agree with Dan. Thin belts on kilts just look out of balance. Just my two cents worth.
