"Navajo" Sgian Dubh

Was hoping to find a "Navajo" or "Hopi" Sgian Dubh on the road this weekend. No luck. Then remembered the trading post back home carried a lot of types of knives. So, stopped in today and found what I've been looking for - a sgian dubh sized knife with Navajo workmanship.

I'm not much on sgian dubhs because of where I work and where I go so only have three. Here's a pic of the new "Navajo" skian dubh on top. Was $60 with sheath. The middle one is a commonly resold one for about $65 I think ( it was a gift). The bottom one is the replica KaBar with sheath that Kathy Lare's husband makes. It was $50.

And here's a pic of "the look" I was hoping for. The workmanship of the handle above the kilt hose.

I've asked my girlfriend to ask around the Hopi rez for any knifemakers. I'm guessing Native knifemakers don't have a clue about the market for sgain dubhs. I think their style has something to offer.

Yes, it's a great twist. I use a lot of native-themed kilt pins for that reason.

I think your probably right on both points, but I agree I would be very interested in a sgian dubh with a Native American design. Particularly if it could be a real blend of sgain dubh shape and NA design.

Very nice. Add me to the list of those intrested in seeing a Native American sgian dubh, the blade with the traditional shape and the NA inlaid handle. Would be very sharp, no pun intended.

The trading post where I bought the knife had no clue who made it for them. My lady, who lives down on the Hopi rez, is gonna see if she can find a Hopi knifemaker willing to do some work. She's in contact with many of the artists down there.

I agree, a more traditional shape with Native American decorated handle would be a great product. We'll see what we can do if we can find a Hopi knifemaker.
