Black berets were adopted by the German Army for its Panzer crews in the 1930's as part of an entirely black uniform (featuring pink piping, the waffenfarbe of the Panzer corps). It was felt that a black uniform was fitting as it would not show oil stains like the normal feldgrau uniform would.

The RTR adopted the black beret in 1924, according to the regimental association's website.

The beret is sensible wear in a confined space, as it protects the head from impact - or at least reduces the effect of it.

I used to wear a beret when sailing our little yacht, as the low level cabin was full of edges to hit. As I made them myself I could make the top large enough so I had a ring three layers thick over the most impacted places.

As a point of clarification, I work in a prison...I am not nor was I ever an Inmate/convict/prisoner/or pretrail detainee...
