New custom sgian dubh

Last Thursday I received a sgian I'd ordered from Michael Wise of Jack, Alabama (http://www.angelfire.com/my/wisecust.../4Gallery.html). The sgian is 7.5" long with a 4" blade and 3.5" handle. The blade is 1084 steel and the handle is African blackwood. This may be my favorite of the three I've had made in the past couple of years. Photos follow:

Nicely done. Very smooth finish. Well executed file work and I've always been a fan of the pin style.

Very nice.

I take it that the pins are not holding the tang? Just for looks?

I feel quite sure that they're holding the tang, and not just for looks.

What say?

Honestly, I'm not sure whether the pins are holding the tang or not. Perhaps Drac or one of the other knifemakers on the forum would be able to offer some insight.

I'll send an email to the maker and ask him... When I saw the photo of the knife on his website, I assumed that it was full tang, which it is obviously not, but I'm not sure how far up the handle the tang runs. Regardless, I'm pleased with the outcome, and will let you all know what he says about the pins/tang.
