New Sgain Dubhs in stag horn

    Hi,

Today was the first time that I've used stag horn for my Sgian Dubh handles, the farmer next door makes sticks (Shepherd crooks mainly) and gave some much needed advice on working with antler and horn. I'm quite pleased with the results, especially the way the Highland Cow horn has a translucent, almost jewel like look on the pommel of the bottom Sgian although the photo doesn't show it at all well.

Sgian Dubhs using stag horn which we've collected on walks on the hill above our house.
Top ~ with Culloden bog oak, brass top pin, Damascus blade
Middle ~ with ebony, Damascus blade
Bottom ~ with Highland cow horn, Damascus blade

    Rab,

Those look wonderful! It's always a treat to see what latest pieces you have created.

MMMMMmmmmmm, Niiiiiice! are they full round or flattened on the back of the handle? O'Neille
Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear; seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. --William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

They're smoothed and polished on the backs to be comfortable to wear but more natural looking than a flattened surface.
The pieces of antler that I chose, especially on the top two Sgians were naturally more oval than round where they meet the blades which helped a great deal.
I'll try to get somemore photos tomorrow,

One of them will be available as 2 of them were made to order.

These particular blades were ones that I re-worked from blanks, I sell both the blanks and the finished blades from my web site, more photos and details about the blades here
