    Talking New Sgian Dubh

    My mother-in law recently went to Scotland for a wedding and brought me back this lovely new sgian dubh. Yeah, a pretty nice mother-inlaw!

    It's a great looking knife, bit I do take issue is it's complete lack if an edge, the blades "edge" side is almost as thick as the spine, and rounded so you can't just put an edge on it! The point is also rounded. I really only think of sgians as ceremonial and not useful blades, but this one isn't even useful as a letter opener!
    After seeing that I found this pretty ironic;

    I believe knife laws are pretty strict in Britain hence the dull blade. I wonder if the sgains from that supplier come to the STM dull or if they sharpen the blades coming to the US? That is amusing though

    I wonder about that myself, I have another sgian from the same maker that I bought from J.Higgins a couple years ago and it has a sharp blade.

    Perhaps since there doesn't seem to be any substantial amount of tang in the handle this was done on purpose for this design to discourage torquing the blade loose? Just a thought.

    Beautiful piece regardless. A nice mother-in-law indeed!

    You have a great MIL. She not only accepts you, and the kilt but buys you cool things to encourage you to wear them.

    I have been told that in the Uk if you are wearing a kilt, you sgian dubh is exempted from the knife restrictions. There are a couple of guys that are regulars on British Blades forum that carry a real knife all the time, simply because wearing a kilt, they can. Or at least that is what I was given to understand. I could always be wrong, it has been known to happen.

    That said, it seems to me that an awful lot of them are meant purely as decorative. It is a beautiful example, and will look great in your hose. It is a pretty nice gift.

    I have a sgian, apparently from the same company, with the exact same blade. It bugs me, too.

    Blade aside, that handle is really beautiful. Wear it, enjoy it, and cut your steak with something else.
