New sgian from DWFII

I am the proud owner of a new sgian. After seeing DWFII 's work in the DIY thread, I was intrigued and asked about one for myself. After some consideration, I commissioned him to make one for me.

It has turned out better than I expected. This is an ebony wood handle with warthog tusk ivory pommel. The celtic medallion is inlaid in the handle. The blade is damascus steel. It came with an elephant leather sheath and a beautiful presentation box.

This is an outstanding knife and a beautiful one, at that. It is undoubtedly the nicest kilt accessory I own and a marvel. DWFII really came through with a fantastic work of art, so naturally I had to show it off here. His talent is amazing.

Nice, good looking blade, and nice leather sheath too. The ivory on the butt-cap is a nice touch that I've not seen before. It should look very nice sitting in your hose.

That is a very nice looking sgian dubh, is it etched Damascus or true Damascus folded steel.

I believe that one is real pattern welded steel. One can get lost in the argument over what constitutes "real" damascus. Most of my Brethren in the smithing world are content to call pattern welded steel "damascus". However, if one wishes to split hairs, "genuine damascus" is a very high carbon steel produced in a crucible which exhibits a surface pattern similar, but by entirely different means. It is most commonly referred to as "wootz" at this time. For more references, Google Alfred Pendray and/or John Verhoeven.

I believe you are correct. I got the blade from Caulfield Leather. I think most of the "damasus" blades that is available (such as the one available through Atlanta Cutlery) are the same sort of thing.

The way I understand it...and, mind you, I'm not a blacksmith nor a metallurgist....true damascus is "folded," with some examples (samurai swords) having literally tens of thousands of folds.

I don't know any one or anywhere to get true folded steel damascus.
