    New Sporran and Belt

I put together a couple of sporrans and belts. I suffered from the same malady that one other fellow had--where to find the right hardware, so I bent up the old favorite, a heavy duty coat hanger. Instead of a small buckle in the center, I used a sam brown stud. I figured it would create a smaller lump.

I found a sporran advertised on one site with a nice celtic knot pattern on the flap. I carved two and then dyed one brown and one black. I still need to put the tassels on the black one. Used pigskin for the gusset and 9/10 oz tooling cowhide for the front and back, which seemed to be a good combination for stiffness and flexibility, and kangaroo for the tassels. Plain 1/2 in belt to hold it on (based on advice learned here).

The pictures aren't that great, but I'll try to get better ones when I debut them at the Pacific NW Games tomorrow.

Looks great! Just curious, what tartan is that? The brown looks especially good with that tartan!

Really nice, I especially like the Irish, vice Scottish belt buckle.

I would be a little worried about using a coat hanger for the buckle though. It just doesnt seem strong enough, and might be liable to bend out of shape under strain. (like course four of a five course meal, or your sixth pint of Guinness)
Try getting one of the rods from Home Depot in the correct thickness. Its a much harder, stiffer metal than coat hanger and will probably stand up better.
.. the kilt had concealed a blaster strapped to one thigh and a knife to the other. He was aware of the present gentle customs against personal weapons, but he felt naked without them. Such customs were nonsense anyhow, foolishment from old women - there was no such thing as "dangerous weapons," only dangerous people.

Great work! And I have the same question, what is that tartan?

Very nice. They look professional but not commercial. I like items that have that depth of real leather and not the look of Pakistan spray paint. O'Neille
Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear; seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. --William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

The tartan is the Moran family tartan. The first (and so far only) kilt had to be in that. It's not very common, and took 6 months for the special weave and to have the kilt made.

The more I work with real leather, the more I fall in love with it. Rich, deep, gains character with age. I've got plans for a couple more, and I need to smooth out my pattern and fix a few other minor things. I'll call them Moran's Sporrans.
