My understanding is that this was a modern reproduction of an 18th century-style sporran with the cantle made in brass, not silver. I inquired with Timothy about having one similar to this made up, but alas, the gentleman who was crafting the cantles had passed away unexpectedly. At least, that's the way I remember it, I think it was 3-4 years ago.

I wonder if the one you are referring to is a knock-off of this one, but with a brass cantle? I will ask tomorrow if anything is known about that.

Here's a photo of HRH Prince Charles wearing a non-fur dress sporran in 1975. It appears to be white "doeskin", very similar to what Sandy has suggested.

Perhaps your friend does have the original and this is a reproduction. I'd love to know the provenance of the real thing!

I don't mean to derail this thread, but what are the black stripes on Princes Phillip and Charles's left hose cuffs? Are they sgian dubh sheath straps? And who is the lady in yellow (sans gloves) to Prince Charles's right?
