Never been to that particular website before, thanks for sharing. Seems like an excellent place to peruse, now I just wish I had a few spare bucks to spend.

I hope--and expect--that they are worn, and are not gathering dust in a museum somewhere.

I thought kid meant goat, and that sporran bag looks reptilian to me, possibly lizard or cayman alligator?
Yes, Mark, young goat. This is embossed to look like reptile.

My understanding is that this was a modern reproduction of an 18th century-style sporran with the cantle made in brass, not silver. I inquired with Timothy about having one similar to this made up, but alas, the gentleman who was crafting the cantles had passed away unexpectedly. At least, that's the way I remember it, I think it was 3-4 years ago.

Cordially,

David
All things are possible, David, but I am assured the cantle on this one is sterling (it's not mine, you understand, but is owned by someone I know). I wonder if the one you are referring to is a knock-off of this one, but with a brass cantle? I will ask tomorrow if anything is known about that.

Here's a photo of HRH Prince Charles wearing a non-fur dress sporran in 1975. It appears to be white "doeskin", very similar to what Sandy has suggested.

I may be mistaken, then, although when I went back through the folder on my computer where I keep saved photos of sporrans I run across that I really like, I found this photo that I saved off the House of Labhran website years ago:

Perhaps your friend does have the original and this is a reproduction. I'd love to know the provenance of the real thing!

Well that's the same pic, David, for sure. We'll know tomorrow.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but what are the black stripes on Princes Phillip and Charles's left hose cuffs? Are they sgian dubh sheath straps? And who is the lady in yellow (sans gloves) to Prince Charles's right?

That, my friend, is THE garter. Not to be confused with A garter.

I believe that's HRH Princess Margaret.
