    Lightbulb Non-tartan Kilt, Tartan Accessories

The more I think about it, the more a non-tartan kilt just seems to call out for tartan accessories: jacket, vest, tie, scarf, etc, though perhaps not all them simultaneously! I did a bit of image searching and this seems to hold true (in my eye) for modern and traditionally styled kilts. Previously I thought any pattern would do the job of complementing a non-tartan, solid colour kilt, but now I'm thinking that tartan is really the way to go

A few of the pics I found are from fellow Xmarkers:

    Hamish

    Matt Newsome

    Panache

    Troxel87

    A couple of me:

    And a couple of others:

    What do you think?

    Any other photographic examples?

    it's a Utilikilt
OATS: A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.

Yes, and where else will you see such horses and such men?

I think you're right! A non-tartan kilt is fine without tartan, but adding a bit of tartan just makes it "pull together" in a way I can't really explain.

My only example (the only non-tartan kilt I own) is also a Utilikilt, which, for some reason, I tend to want to wear with a flannel shirt in a 'plaid' pattern. It's not technically tartan, but I think it satisfies the same purpose. Adding a bit of pattern can really offset the hum-drum look of a non-tartan kilt.

CMcG, which members of the forum are those pictures from?

I used to wear plaid shirts with my khaki kilt. I haven't worn plaid shirts with anything for a while now, though. I don't feel right about wearing tartan anymore, so would not mix tartan with the khaki kilt.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Tobus; I cannot weigh in on the direct subject: BUT, your the 1st one I've seen who has the sense to wear Leggings hiking! The questions: are those WW2 British leggings? The fit is execellent; and your skill with the garment is very apparent. It is a better look IMHO than high top boots. Does any one else out there wear Leggings-Puttees- or &tc- when you are out hiking?

The first 6 look great, the last 2 a bit OTT.

Better to be looked over than overlooked. Cock your hat, angles are attitudes.

These are actually WWII US Army surplus leggings. I have several pair that I use for rough hiking (and lower civilian spats for more gentle 'nature walks').

I had a thread on them about a year ago here. Unfortunately, that thread has been locked since it's older than 6 months. But as I recall, we've had several discussions on the subject of leggings, gaiters, puttees, and other leg protection. A simple search will find them.

But since we're in a thread about tartan accessories, maybe I should consider making WWII style tartan leggings????

    Re: Non-tartan Kilt, Tartan Accessories

I have been known to wear a tartan tie with my all black kilt suit. I also like to wear a checked shirt with my black kilt, beacuse it doesnt go with my tartan ones. I'll have a look for pics to see if there are any. No pics sorry

I added names to the OP for you

We know your moral issue with wearing THCD but consider this: if the Scottish Government's Register of Tartans is willing to list a non-clan tartan, then it has an official status for non-Scots. Perhaps your state might have a tartan? Or if you have any Irish blood or even affiliation, you can wear the one that I designed called the New World Irish tartan
