One, two, buckle my....kilt

Okay, two questions one for everyone, and then a challenge to the kilt fashionistas (of course everyone can respond!):

1 - What shape of belt buckle do you wear (if any) - square, round, or other (describe).

2 - When picking a buckle, do you find certain shapes (colour is easy!) work better with certain sporrans, body types or faces...or just in general? I was particularly thinking of round vs. square.

I made one kilt with round buckles. Square is better. The round ones tend to want to twist on the strap when you fasten it.

When I wear the traditional kilt... I wear the traditional belt with the rectangular buckle.

When I wear the casuals... I wear a 1.5" belt with any number of buckles. I actually use the buckle as the "defining" accessory. If I'm in a rowdy Pub, then I'll wear the one with the bottle opener in it. If it's a nice place, the Celtic Cross works well. I have a LOAD of buckles that run the entire gammut of "buckledom". Sicne the kilts, sporrans, shirts and boots are pretty-well set, the buckle is the ONE THING that I use to chenge it up.

As best as I know, there are no rules about buckles... unless you're dealing with a kilt belt and formal wear.

Traditionally, a belt with the oblong, decorative 'plate' buckle is considered to be a Dress belt to be worn in the evening or with the full Highland rig. A day belt has a regular (but chunky) pronged buckle.

For my casual or alternative kilts I have a selection of 2" or 2½" wide belts in brown or black leather, and with a mix of chrome or brass pronged buckles in various shapes - including round. I try to select the buckle that is the closest match to other metal I might be wearing, such as the kilt pin, whilst the belt itself is chosen to match my sporran and shoes/boots.
