    Outdoor, rough use socks?

I want to wear my kilts hiking this winter, and need to know where I can find some good, tough, washable, thick socks that are kilt height. Can ya'all help a brother out?

    Try Hamilton Dry Goods.

They look great, fit large calves without falling down and at $8 you can't argue about the price.

I'm planning on wearing them up for the cold. I have plenty of regular crew length hiking socks for pushing down when it's warmer. I also don't have small calves...

I just got into some of my winter gear for this ski season and discovered my old X-Country ski socks from high School. They are nice wool over the knee length and don't show any signs of wear from 4 years and several thousand miles of skiing. These are from the days of knee length uniforms so I'm not sure if they are even made anymore. I think I'll go look at REI to see. O'Neille

I think standard wool(blend) kilthose are great for cold weather. They don't cost a fortune and when they get damaged it's no drama

Has anyone tried Stillwaters socks? Are they thin or thick?

    I have large calves:

18" on the right, 17½" on the left.

I wear these in the 9-13 size with no trouble at all. I have to fold the tops down before I put them on, though. There's a thread around the top that won't go around the calves.
