    overcoat?

What kind of winter coat is appropriate for wear with a traditional (tartan) kilt? Maybe something a little dressy...like for an evening of fine dining or wearing to and from a friends party, etc..

Obviously, despite the kilt and Argyll jacket being all wool, they aren't gonna be enough when the snow flies.

I like the looks of an Inverness. I found a beauty in wool for under $400.00 here:http://www.bodyhangings.com/inverness.html

But I wonder if there are alternatives? What do most of you wear when out and about on a cold winter's evening?

    Those Inverness look pretty sharp.

I usually just throw a sweater on. After spending several years in very upstate NY, I've become rather accustomed to the cold.

I've seen my dad wear a standard overcoat with his kit and I must say it looks a bit off to me.

The Inverness is just stunning - it just seems like the perfect "fit" with a traditional tartan kilt. When I'm feeling a bit more rough and tumble - I wear a very short waisted, well insulated jacket. Sort of an bomber style jacket - showing as much of the pleats as possible.

If I wear a kilt when the weather is cold and wet, I will wear an overcoat to shield me from the element. Showing the pleats to the world isn't a priority for me.
