    Period Bonnet

Does anyone have a pattern for knitting a period 1740's highland bonnet?

Contact Diane Donald (Arlen's wife). She knits a fine bonnet and sells patterns, too:

I looked at them and I am sure they are spiffing bonnets, but the twelve month waiting list was a wee bit much for me.

You say you are looking for a pattern. This is a pattern generator for a beret.

    http://www.thedietdiary.com/knitting...s/HKBeret.html

set the pattern for a slightly deeper band, and a over hang of 1.8 or higher and you have a beret with a larger crown. Add a torrie or Pom Pom on top and you have a balmoral.

The pattern ask for gauge for your knitting. Remember if you are going to felt the balmoral to adjust your gauge for the felted results. For example, your swatch has 6 stitches per inch or 24 stitches for 4 inches before felting. Once felted the swatch is now 2 inches long, your felted gauge will be 12 stitches per inch. Before felting you should be able to wear your balmoral down around your shoulders.

My attempt at a Balmoral from this pattern generator:

Have you looked at Jas. Townsend's bonnets?

She sells the patterns as well. I think they cost a few dollars and she usually gets in touch with you to send the pattern within a week.

The suggestion below for the beret generator looks really good, too.

F&I events ALWAYS have at least one sutler that sells bonnets. I got a green one at Feast of the Hunter's Moon. Don't wear it much.
The Virginia Co'y of Jaeger's Bn of Roger's Rangers use the bonnet as their uniform headgear. Check with them for reliable knitters/vendors. There are ALOT of resources for bonnets.
