set the pattern for a slightly deeper band, and a over hang of 1.8 or higher and you have a beret with a larger crown. Add a torrie or Pom Pom on top and you have a balmoral.
The pattern ask for gauge for your knitting. Remember if you are going to felt the balmoral to adjust your gauge for the felted results. For example, your swatch has 6 stitches per inch or 24 stitches for 4 inches before felting. Once felted the swatch is now 2 inches long, your felted gauge will be 12 stitches per inch. Before felting you should be able to wear your balmoral down around your shoulders.

F&I events ALWAYS have at least one sutler that sells bonnets. I got a green one at Feast of the Hunter's Moon. Don't wear it much.
The Virginia Co'y of Jaeger's Bn of Roger's Rangers use the bonnet as their uniform headgear. Check with them for reliable knitters/vendors. There are ALOT of resources for bonnets.
