Regimental hose tops

I'm trying to complete my piping uniform. After looking at some photos of the Gordon Highlanders (RIP), I've noticed that, despite their green and bue colors, they wear red and white hose tops with red flashes. After more browsing, I noticed that almost every regiment does this. Is there any rhyme or reason to his colorblind madness?!?! :confused:

p.s. - No matter what the reason, I've already bid on some on eBay along with spats!
