Risking Red - Lewis Kilt Hose, that is....

I'm really liking these Lewis kilt hose that Matt sells at the Scottish Tartans Museum. When the last shipment came in I bought six pair (ouch!)....wasn't sure how the red ones would work out...plan was to wear them with the Loud MacLeod tartan kilt.

But this morning, dressing for work in my Cameron Red and Black, I thought why not. So gave them a try. Here's the result.

My lady says its not her favorite combination...it ain't perfect, but it works...for me...I think...

I mean, no way I was gonna add a red shirt....

Perhaps a black shirt to tone it down a bit? Actaully, I think black hose and shrit with that kilt and flashes would look great!

Actually red socks can work with a red kilt. I found that Manchester United football socks, red with three white stripes at the turndown, worked with my Cunningham kilt.

    That look really nice Ron!

My own thoughts about red hose are that they look the best with tartans with only a little red in them. For instance, Campbell of Cawdor, or MacKenzie, or Hunting Robertson, or Murray of Atholl. They help to bring out that color and add a bit of brightness to the outfit.

The Duke of Argyle even wears red hose with the Campbell (Black Watch) tartan, which has no red in it whatsoever.

It's a bit tougher to wear red hose with a tartan that is primarily red. I'm not saying it cannot be done, but it is easier to make it look bad, in my opinion. I think that Ron's outfit here looks just fine.

I would NOT add a red shirt. A nice kakhi color shirt, I think, would look perfect. You need a nice muted nuetral color to balance it all out.

I'm interested in what Hamish might have to say...

Red is very striking colour. How about red hose with Black Stewart?

I think it works out great. I wouldn't think twice about wearing that. I like Matt's opinion about a khaki shirt too though...

I think it looks fine. Really it's not that much brighter than wearing diced hose. I'd go with the muted shirt myself.

I think Matt is onto something here. I hope you post a picture of your Mcleod of Lewis tartan with the red hose. I keep thinking about how well the "Loud Mcleod" and Galbraith Ancient tartans would go with red hose. And then I think $45 for socks! Ye Gods! Where will this whole kilt thing end?

    Cheers
