    Roughed in sgian dhu

Forged this from a hockey skate blade on Thursday. It's on the small side for a sgian, but it'll be a nice little day blade. It's sitting on the piece of wood that'll be the handle. The notches in the tang are recesses for the Two Ton epoxy that'll hold blade and handle together. I'm going to sand it down, but leave some of the marks and imperfections, rather than bring it to a smooth mirror polish.

A feature on this that isn't seen on sgian dhus is the short riccasso below the edge. My friend Dan, who'd a bladesmith, did that on a sgian he made and I like it.

I took a picture of the jimping, but my camera doesn't like close detail shots, so it came out blurry. I'll try again tommorrow.

    Thumbs up

Nice job, and great to see more and more people making their own accouterments too. Many times it's the only way to get what you want, and have it done correctly. Cheers.

Excellent - I can't wait to see it when it's cleaned up a bit. Is that walnut for the handle? I love the grain of walnut.

Will you be pinning the handle or just glue and carve?

I have no idea what kind of wood it is, actually, except that it's hardwood. I pulled it out of the scrap pile in the wood shop. It's a good thing it was scrap, too, because I botched it I don't like working with wood. If I make a mistake in metal, I can fix it. If I make a mistake in wood, I'm screwed. Well, there's more where that came from. I'll get it eventually.
