sgian dubh rebuild....

This past summer, I purchased a cheap sgian dubh from a local shop. It was of rather poor quality and the metal trim tended to snag my expensive hand knit hose. However, the blade was pretty decent so a couple of weeks ago, I set about re-building it. Here's the result.



I hand shaped the handle from a piece of "birds-eye" sugar maple and capped it with padauk, an african hardwood, then carefully sanded it through 5 grades of sandpaper. I applied 2 coats of acrylic varnish and then machine burnished it with pure carnuba. I'm quite pleased with the result. I'm going to try another with a bit more shape to it. A good wood lathe is about the same price as a heavyweight kilt. Hmmmmm.....

That was Blu's knife.

The best I've done so far is an antler handled knife I made from my Grandpa's old straight razor. I put brass brads in the handle for extra grip. The blade needs more finish work but it is sharp!
I have an old skew chisel I might get to making into a knife or sgian dubh one day. It's 1/4" thick high carbon steel.

I go to lee valley on a regular baisis, ur right, toy store got some great stuff there.there's one just down the 401 from me.good place to buy thick leather work belts, look good on a UK. not as good as an RK belt tho

I though I do not actually own shares in Lee Valley, some of the staff will give my wife and I a personal greeting when we shop there.

Had to put the tool buying on hold once I caught the kilt bug.

My big problem, now, is that my wife has a list of projects that she wants me to do.
