    Sgian Dubh (www.scottishsgiandubhs.co.uk)

Anyone ordered a Sgian Dubh from these guys? They've got one that I really am liking for daywear, I'm just wondering about their reputation and quality.
    Any experiences?

I've not heard of them but they do have some different styles than you find anywhere else and the price seems OK for a custom shop. Let us know when you pull the trigger how you like them.

I know nothing about that one, but the two I can recommend are:

Rab Gordon and J. Michael McRae

Both of them do very nice work.

Yeah, the quality looks great for the price! As opposed to the others mentioned above who look like they've got outstanding product but their prices are quite elevated for what amounts to an ornamental knife. I buy Gerbers to cut stuff with...

I haven't bought directly from them, but I have one which I bought from a vendor at a games this summer. Very nice craftsmanship. This staghorn handle is trimmed out with black walnut and it has a pewter thistle emblem mounted on the cap. The sheath is brown leather embossed with a celtic weave design.

That said, if you've got the jones for a nice blade, I'd also recommend a look at Rab Gordons work. I get butterfies in my stomach browsing his website.

Yes but they are also "objets d'art"!

    Beg pardon?

If I'm carrying a knife, rest assured that it is not "ornamental."

Beautiful, maybe. Functional, most definitely. I like 1095 steel.

Yeah well, if given the choice between using a $100 Sgian Dubh and a $30 pocket knife to cut twine, cardboard etc. I'm going with the more utilitarian choice. Being in a pipe band, having the Sgian Dubh is largely for show. Though I suppose if I were Captain Moneybags and had the money to waste I'd feel much like you do as I guess it wouldn't matter.

    To each their own!
