Does anyone know of a source for the shoes with the buckles (you know, the "Pilgrim" shoes)? I am not particularly fond of the shoes that lace up the leg, and am looking for a different type of formal shoe to wear with the kilt. I see the Kiltstore has some, but their sizes don't go large enough for my "dogs" (I'm a size 12). I'm not in any immediate need of them, but I'm shopping around.

I bought a pair of these on clearance at Sears for $10. They are very comfortable. I'd like to find them in brown and/or russet.

These are black with tan or gold colored stitching. They are a copy of a Doc Marten design.. I think it may be called a Monk shoe. Anyhow, you may like these. The photo doesn't do them justice.

Do you have a DSW store in your area, I've seen some similar shoes in our local DSW.

My personal preference is black wing tips, I am not really into the ghillies either.

If I need to go formal in the short term, I've got some shoes I wore with a tuxedo, so those will work. I'm just looking down the road when I have some spare funds, whatever those are.;)

I have a nice looking pair of Sketchers, polished black leather with a strap across the top and a buckle off to the side. Kind of a modern version of the old buckle shoe. It looks like Sketcher doesn't make them anymore, but I've seen other makes. Probably easier to find than the old style. Also, wingtips are perfectly fine. Except for the lacing they're nearly the same as the gillies.

I had a fairly annoying experience with similar shoes and a matching belt. In October, 2001, some friends and I were headed out to Boston for the U.S. World Cup Qualifier against Jamaica (as well as some good seafood) and I was wearing said shoes and belt.

This being just over a month after 9/11, the airport security details had boosted the power of their metal detectors significantly. I got pulled over to the side and wanded both in Columbus and Boston. At one point, I was standing with both hands out to my sides, my legs spread, and the wand checking out my male parts. The TSA person then said I needed to take off my belt and hold that up, too. To which I said something to the effect of "Um... not unless you want me to moon the whole airport" (I was wearing pants, I was not yet enlightened) and she relented. I was able to hold my pants up with one hand and the belt out to the side with the other, while my five traveling companions laughed and snapped pictures of me.

Summary - if you get shoes like this, don't wear 'em in the airport.
