    Silly sporran question

I've always worn the sporran belt outside the kilt's belt loops, and over a kilt belt, if I'm wearing one. Is this considered the "proper" way to wear it? It seems to hang better when not attached to anything, but I didn't know if that was "the way it's done." Just a silly question.

It's likely the best way to wear it. You can put the straps through the kilts belt loops with no problem, but the leather loops they put on some kilt belts are a waste and just interfer. At times you need to slide the sporran off to the side and those loops on the belt make that difficult.

I've read that both are ok. Just as long as the sporran doesn't hang down too low. I've worn mine both ways at different times. Outside allows the sporran to be swung around to the side for convenience if needed.

I have no belt loops on my kilt ...So I wear it as you do .I agree it does hang a lot better.I think it's up to you how you wear it. Which ever you find best is best. Why change for a rule? If your happy with the way it hangs.

do whatever you think best, I have a belt loop on my kilt belt, I put this to the back and put the sporran belt thru that, works ok for me, some people put the sporran strap thru the kilt loops.

There are no 'rules' concerning this. However, the sporran straps are traditionally worn loose - not passed through any loops at all - and should sit comfortably along the lower edge of the kilt belt, not running on top of the belt.

As for where the sporran itself should be positioned: again, there are no rules but, traditionally, the top of your sporran will be positioned about 4 fingers width below the bottom of your belt buckle. A sporran sitting there will not only look comfortable, but will BE comfortable. Any lower or higher than that is not a good idea from the point of view of your own comfort.

It makes sense that, since it seems to work best wearing it loose, it should be worn loose. Much of kilt-wearing "etiquette" stems from comfort. Thanks for clarifying this silly question for me.

    Andrew.
