Sporran position

I'm not really sure where that particular piece of misinformation has it's origin, but the sporran is certainly (and was, in period) a place to carry small items. Period.

. . .Perhaps this misconception is what leads so many Americans to wear their sporran too low, as has been mentioned in this thread aready?

These comments about Americans wearing their sporrans too low surprise me. I suppose I may be one of those who may do this occasionally. When I began wearing the kilt, I was told to allow a hand's-width between the belt and the sporran, which I do sometimes, but not always. If this is wrong, then I have been corrected. But, when I look at all the vintage photos posted by OC Richard of Scots wearing the sporran, I see sporrans hanging just as low.

Me too, I've never really questioned this before, and now I can't seem to decide exactly where my sporran should hang.
