Sporrans for lassies

A fine looking couple too, but I wondered how "proper" it is for women to wear a sporran.
With the recent discussion about what to wear, does anyone have an opinion on this?

Personally, (and you know I always have an opinion ) I'm not sure if I like it at all.

I don't like it at all Graham - but I cannot say exactly why. After all, a gal needs somewhere to keep her bits and pieces just as much as a guy does. Nevertheless, it just does not look right.

Of course, the gals should not be wearing kilts anyway - they have kilted skirts - and still have their handbags, etc. which we can hardly emulate!!

I have read that the only time lasses should wear kilts and sporrans is when they might be part of a pipe band, but I still find that somewhat objectionable. It is crossdressing, plain and simple!
Why do female pipers have to be dressed EXACTLY the same as their male counterparts? Women in symphony orchestras do not wear Dinner Jackets and black ties like the men, they wear black, feminine dresses (or whatever). I see no reason why female pipers should not wear kilted skirts and jackets perhaps similar to the men's, but leaving out the sporrans and some of the other more masculine accessories.

Just my opinion (and I have 'gone on' again - sorry!)

I tend to agree with Hamish. I have seen a couple of ladies attending our local St. Andrew's Society events dressed in full kilted regalia, which just doesn't look quite right.

As far as bands, I think it is being done for uniformity. Since pipe bands have their origins in the military, where uniformity is the backbone of military society, it stands to reason that you would want a uniform standard for all members, regardless of sex.

It still looks odd, though -- after all, Highland Dancers (female) do not wear sporrans!

Well yet again we appear to be of like mind Hamish, as we all seem to be.

I've also wondered (as vice pres, of our local Pipe band) why the lassies have to be dressed alike. I guess money and the cost of uniforms comes into it, but i still wonder.

On a side note, a friend, Bravehearts member and drummer in the band who does some crafty work in leather came up with a design he calls a "Spag" a cross between a sporran and a handbag. It is worn by the fairer sex over the shoulder but looks like a sporran.

Just not sure about the name of it tho'

I don't care for women wearing sporrans either. My thought is if a lass is going to wear a bag of that type it should be worn on the hip and be a bit more rectangular. As I understand it the sporran worn as it is is, in part, to cover anatomical characteristics a lass simply doesn't have.
