| | | Storing Sporran with Belt Inside?
* The answer to the question comes from MacMillan of Rathdown; see his post. It turns out that keeping the belt rolled up inside of the sporran will not dammage the sporran, and is also practical. *
Should a sporran be stored with something inside that keeps it expanded?
I'm asking because I've been keeping the belt for one of my sporrans rolled up inside of the sporran and it keeps it expanded. I don't know if this is harming the sporran, or if it even matters. It is an actual 3/4" men's dress belt that is being used as a sporran strap, and not the chain or kilt straps that are made for sporrans. These are the type of sporrans that have the stiff front and back, but softer, flexible sides. All but one of them have the leather-flap closure.
Any other tips on storing a sporran would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I've been doing the same thing with my canvas robroy, I don't think it should be a problem. I expect that when I build the badger, I'll keep it in some kind of box or somesuch to protect the fur from rubbing and crushing.

I usually wrap the belt around my Thorfinns. It keeps the flap in shape.

Sounds like a great idea Ted. I just leave mine in place and the strap splays all over...would keep the strap out of trouble and support the sporran's shape.
See. There be creative genius' on this board.

Actually, Ron, in the back of my mind I was thinking of how you put a shoe tree in leather shoes to keep their shape when I started putting the strap in their. I just don't know if it is harming the sides in some way that I don't understand.
Who knows, it might be a good thing...
BTW, I am using a 3/4" dress belt as a strap, and that is why I used the term "belt." It's probablly a little wider and thicker than most straps made for sporrans.

I have been storing my two non-chain sporran belts rolled up inside the sporran for the very reason you mention and because it keeps them out of the way and together- easily found when wanted.

Only I tend to forget which belt is in which sporran. Things get interesting when one has sixteen sporrans, four belts and no clue which sporran has the one I need.

This might turn into a "how many sporran do you have" thread, I only have two and an old weathered black leather fanny pack that just fits well like a sporran with its own belt, so no problemo here knowing where belts are.
