I have a brown Stillwater econemy, and a black econemy sporran.
Also a brown Stillwater, daywear, bunny sporran; the kind with the leather flap.
Finally, I have a Celtic Croft cromed cantle sporran; kind of a dressy thing but without fur, so that is four.
The black econemy sporran is usually the one with the strap inside it, but I have now put the bunny sporran's belt strap inside it.
Those are both using the 3/4" belts, but the chain straps are not in there.
The sporran with the cantle is stored flat without it's chain strap inside... or attached for that matter. I don't want that chain touching the cantle. Before long, I will be making a cloth bag for storing it, and have an attached pouch for the chain strap.

Now that I tried it, the chain straps fit in there along with the leather belt strap just fine; either in the middle or at the bottom or top of the rolled strap.
Guess if you only have a couple of straps for several sporrans, you could put hose in the other sporrans...

Ted,
Keeping the belt rolled up inside the sporran is a very sensible idea, and will in no way damage the sporran. If using shoe trees, be sure to remove them before putting on your shoes.  |

Yes... I can see how removing the shoe trees before I put on the shoes would be a good idea...
I guess taking the shoes off my feet before putting the shoe trees in the shoes would also be a good idea.

I usually hang my sporrans from their belts, so that the tassels and horse hair stay straight. So, by that, if I stored the chain inside, I wouldn't have anything to hang them by.

I see what you mean.
No horse hair in my collection of sporrans, but the bunny sporran has chain and bead tastles with fur at the end. It is in a bag that has a hook at the top and hangs with the rest of the daywear outfit.
The economy sporrans have stiff leather tastles, and I lay them flat and face-up on a cloth padding in my accessory drawer.
The chrome cantle sporran does not have tastles, rather a leafe-like leather work on the front face. Like I posted before, I will be making a cloth bag to store it, and it will have a hanging hook. For now, it lays face down on the cloth padding in my accessory drawer.
I also put a cloth around the waistplate buckle of the dress kilt belt that I use with that sporran; I don't want them getting scratched...

I've been thinking of instaling a length of pegboard in or next to my closet, and using some of those really neat pegboard hooks and hangers for some of my clothing items. I already have a few hooks for belts and so on, but I have a very limited closet space. I bet there are a few different ways a sporran could be attached. It could even serv as a wall decoration when not in use.

Ok, I'm going to set up a jig for my drill press to make a strip that will accept the pegboard hangers. It will go on the side of my closet. I'll see if I can rig up a sporran hanger of some sort. I have a few broken clothes hangers that I might be able to turn into some kind of sporran hangers.
I have to do something because I have run out of room to put these things...

I've been giving serious consideration myself to storage for my kilts & accessories, rather than having some items in the closet (hanging from the rod or upon the shelf) or in a dresser drawer etc etc.
I'm awaiting to see what I inherit of my dear departed grandparents furniture before I take the next step, but I've been giving consideration to locating a nice Armoire & line the closet space (& drawers) with Red /Spanish Cedar where I can hang my kilts & any woolen items (jackets, vests, caps) and utilize the drawers for storage of hose, garters, sporrans, belts, etc etc.
You get the idea 
There-by (finally) keeping everything together so I'm not hunting all over for it & also protecting it from the elements (moths etc).
I look forward to seeing photos of your completed project
