    Tartan Tam? Huh?

Okay, I think I got the name right, you guys know what I'm talking about. Looks sort of like a Glengerry (spelled it wrong and it's probably the wrong hat ). What's the story behind the tartan tam and when would I where it? Also what is a good place to get one at.
From the lone Shieling of the misty islands,
Mountains divide us and the waste of seas.
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.

Hmm, well, I just looked up some stuff and it hit me that the tartan tam is a womans garment (at least from what I've read). If it's not, I still might have a shred of honour left, it it is...

With all respect, I think that the tartan tams are sort of considered a bit "stereotypical" and most of the assembled multitude avoid them.

This novelty item may help to sum it up:

    Perhaps a nice Balmoral...

A womans tartan tam is made from six pieces of tartan.

A mans tartan tam is made from two or three pieces of tartan..I think: Head band, bottom hat piece, top hat piece...

The tam on the left (looks like dress Gordon) is the mens. The others are womens and childs..

    more female tams

    The tartan Glengary

These are how we sold them when I worked at the STM 8 yrs ago..
    6 piece = ladies
    flat head pice = mens

The company that makes them is Ingles Buchan of Glasgow. I personally don't suggest them as kilt accessories (tartan overkill), but if someone desires?.. Knock yourself out! Most people who wear these don't wear these with kilts.

When I looked on Ebay the Tams all seemed to be the joke party ones with the false beards, conveying maybe that they are seen as common or jokey items.

Apart from the famous Tartan Army I don't think I have seen anyone seriously wearing them with a kilt.
