Thoughts on an odd tie

I've seen this type of tie pop up on kilt rentals quite frequently.

Does anyone actually own a tie like this? Is it supposed to mimic an ascot? I was just wondering if anyone had information on this. It doesn't quite look right IMO.

It is called a Rouche tie, I bought several on sale at Hector Russell a while ago gave one or two to Dee as he was looking for one. I rarely if ever wear them good thing they were on sale. Here is my purple one to go with the Isle of Skye

There is a two-fold reason it doesn't look "quite right":
(1) The five button waistcoat with the Prince Charlie coatee creates an unfortunate amalgam of lines. The PC is designed to be worn with a three button waistcoat and so the "plunge" of the coatee's lapels looks awkward-- rather like you are wearing either the wrong waistcoat or the wrong jacket!
(2) The overall look is a pastiche, and like most pastiches it doesn't work. The wing collar is far too large (it looks like a regular collar folded over), as is the knot in the tie. Instead of looking Vicorian or Edwardian, the result comes off looking too theatrical, to "made up".

I'm not a fan of pre-tied neckwear, but if worn with a five button waistcoat, dress Argyll jacket, and a fold-over collar (with a bit of spread to show off the knot) it would be acceptable at a formal day time wedding. In the evening (same jacket and waistcoat) you would be better off with a foulard or stripped tie, or one in a solid, conservative, colour. If worn to a formal affair in the evening (ie: black tie or tuxedo) then a black bow tie and three button waistcoat would be the perfect choice to go with the dress Argyll.

Ive always liked the rouche tie look compared to the bow tie ..with the right waistcoat it just sets it off ,i guess there is so many colours of that style to choose from as well it can also affects the final look

Not sure what I think about the tie. I don't care for it so much with the PC and 3 button waistcoat... I think it looks better with a 5 or 6 button waistcoat and a jacket that would suit...certainly not the PC like the guy in the pic. He just seems a jumble to me.

I've revised my opinion and agree with KFCarter. It looks right with only the higher-buttoned waistcoat and AJ. I still like the look.

The collar also is not starched well, it's drooping.

For the Burns Suppers I attended this past January, I acquired an honest-to-goodness, tie it youself, black silk cravat. I also bought a dress shirt with an honest-to-goodness detachable wing collar. I was very happy with the look. I wore it with a black Argyle jacket.

Here it is with a black waistcoat (5 button, notched lapel).
