Tweeds to go with green based tartans

Let me say up front that I'm not looking to get a bunch of "don't worry about matching" or "wear whatever you like/want" comments to this thread. Now that that is out of the way, on to my question...

I've seen a bunch of very nice tweeds lately that I fancy. The problem is, I'm not sure how well they compliment my tartan. I primarily wear the US Army Tartan when dressing in highland traditional fashion (when going casual, my boxpleat BW wins out). I like the Army tartan, but due to the very bold colors, I sometimes think that it's so strong in color that it doesn't tone well with certain color hose, jackets, etc. I've begun to have a great appreciation for weathered colors, as they seem to go with darned near everything.
I currently have a light brown tweed jacket conversion that I think looks okay with both of my tartans. I'm posting to ask what shades of tweed people think would best compliment this tartan...and if you have a kilt in a similar color pallet and have pics with a tweed jacket, I would greatly appreciate the visual aid.

    Here's the US Army Tartan:

Here's a couple tweeds that make me drool...

First, our own Panache (Jamie), WalkerK (Kent), and MacMillan's Son (Brooke) at a party in my back yard last week. (Warning: Don't look at the flat cap, Jock!!) While I am a HUGE fan of Brooke's tweed, I don't think it would work with my tartan (I want one, regardless). Jamie's might...but the plain lovat blue is a bit sedate...I'm looking for something with a check pattern of some sort.

Next, Downunder Kilt wearing his Poacher's Tweed from USA Kilts. I really like this tweed. Would it work well against a green kilt? This tweed appears a greyish green to me on my monitor, but I think it might be more of a medium grey in reality.

Finally, HRH, the Duke of Rothesay (Is this also Poacher's Tweed, or something different?):

Anybody have any suggestions for greys, greens, blues, or tans with a windowpane or similar type pattern that you think would look good?

    Tweed

    Jeff,
See if you can find a photo of HRH in a Stewart Hunting tartan and jacket. What ever he is wearing may be a good match.

I'll keep my eyes open for you.

I dont know how to clip photos from other posts Jeff, but if you look at MacMurdos post #78 in the" HRH Duke of Rothesay..." photos thread, third pic down. He is wearing a dark green and blue based tartan (Gordon ?) and a light jacket and waistcoat. I think it is a really sharp look!

    Please give Laura my apologies

A Russet brown, a colour not often seen these days, tweed jacket would work perfectly.

Something along the colour of this, I do happen to think a plain brown tweed is very effective as a jacket.

longhuntr74, I have taken a photo of the poacher tweed next to what StKilda Retail, class as a Highland Green tweed. The photo, on my monitor is lighter than the actual jackets but I hope it provides you with some insight in the differences in tone of colour between the two. I have just held my jacket up against the sample pic of the poacher tweed on USA Kilts and it's a very good match for colour. There are also some very nice estate tweeds on the site.

I agree with Jock. I wear shades of brown with my US Army tartan kilt regularly. To me it seems bring out the rest of the colors.

    Something kind of like this?

    Here's a close-up shot of the tweed.

We have the Poacher's tweed along with all the other Ettrick tweed options from Lochcarron listed here:
    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/lochcarron_jkt.htm

The main color of the Poacher is a lovat green, which in general goes well with most tartans. But the overstripes are yellow and a reddish-pink color. I don't think they would look bad with the US Army tartan, but I'm also not saying that would be your best match.

I agree with others that browns would work well, and to that end there is always the Gamekeeper from Lochcarron's Etrrick range. But if you are looking for something with a subtle pattern, I might suggest the Ghillie from the same range. It's a nice mid-grey color, which goes well with just about any tartan, and if you enlarge the image you'll see it has a subtle windowpane pattern with lighter grey overstripes. Might be just the thing.

If you like the thought of a check pattern, you may also want to browse these offerings:
    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/glen_tilt.htm

These are worsted wool cloths, so they have a smoother hand than tweeds. But you may find a pattern there to your liking.
