Unconventional sgian dubhs

I'm a bit of a blade collector and I really don't like to own anything that is not functional. Because of that, traditional sgian dubhs usually annoy me and I rarely wear one. Most of them are basically decorative jewelry and serve very little purpose as a useful tool. I know there are several knife makers out there who do make good sgian dubhs with high quality steel blades but I don't own one of those...yet. However, I recently acquired a little knife that I think will serve as a perfect every day wear sgian dubh. It's a Busse Combat Game Warden with 4" black G10 scales and a 3" satin finished blade of INFI steel (making a 7" long knife). I don't have a sheath for it yet but as soon as I make or buy one I'm going to start wearing a "sgian dubh" whenever I'm kilted (provided it's legal where I am). Does anyone else own/wear an unconventional sgian dubh? I'd be curious to see them.

The majority of sgian dubhs are designed to be exactly that and nothing more.. which is one of the reasons I don't carry one.

Idunno if this counts as unconventional or not, but I'll share it since I havent' seen one like it anywher else.

A few years back when I was a freshman in college I met a girl from a mountain town some ways from here. Her dad was a kiltie, and one day after I visited her family for a while he presented me with this knife that he acquired in Scotland.

Well, that was some years ago and I've since lost the girl and kept the knife. Wether that was the right way to do it Idunno, but here it is.

Try a fine or ultra fine scotch brite pad. Use a little bit of sewing machine or gun oil for lubrication and scrub the blade along it's length. That will get the rust off and put a satin finish on the blade. You may see some dark staining or pitting if the rust is very bad but the scotch brite will make it will look better than it did. If you want a shinier finish, use several grits of fine grit wet/dry sand paper and the same oil. Start with, say, 600 grit and work your way up to 1000, 1500, 2000 and so on until you get the finish that you like. The sand paper is available at most auto supply and hardware stores. You can then do a final polish with Metal-Glo or a similar product. Just make sure you don't get oil or sanding slurry on the grip or it could stain. You may want to cover it with tape or something.

I carry a Gerber multi-tool on my hip (its too big for my sock). I would love to have one or two more modern looking knives to wear with my Utilikilts and 1 or 2 more traditional looking ones (maybe a Rab Gordon and/or a Raptor).

I was at the Highland Games near Albany, N.Y., a few months back and met a craftsman, whose speciality seems to include knives in celtic motifs to be worn with kilts. As I recall, he was up from Florida. If there's interest, I can check through my acculmated business cards from that event to see if I can direct someone who's interested.
