    Undies under the Kilt

I read the rules and I couldn’t tell if this would be a taboo subject or not. If I broke the rules I apologize, please feel free to delete or move. I won’t be offended.

I have a legitimate question regarding what’s under the kilt. I’m not asking if you do or don’t wear underwear, (I don’t want to know) what I’m curious is, is there a legitimate reason not to wear underwear? Where did it start and why is it that we don’t wear underwear today? When I hike and do certain things I think I would prefer some support.

I'm not really a good "authority" on the subject matter, but I think realitively, underwear is a more modern "invention" in relation to other "garments". The romans and the greeks for example, as far as I know never wore them. And the kilt probably came about before undies as with the great kilts they were just wrapped around the body with one piece of fabric. Anyways, thats more or less what I think, and would be interested in someone with actual facts ;)

Oh my god, I didn’t mean to putt it in the Kilt Accessories forum (I mean it could be an accessory)! I meant to putt it in the General kilt advice.

    Sorry folks.

Cool Legitimate reasons (Hope these are OK, too)

Comfort, of course. But there's virility, convenience in the men's room, and spontaneity with your significant other.

A kilt allows a certain freedom of movement, undergarments lessens that freedom to a degree. However there are times when undergarments are a good idea but at the end of the day the choice is entirely your own. Another kiltie would never question your choice, nor ask for that matter.

Undergarments have an edge in keeping the kilt clean...perhaps less important with a wash'n'wear number but not insignificant with wool.
I read someone's post when I first joined the forum regarding his decision to always wear something underneath because he worked around children...it's my observation that, in my daily life at least, children are almost always present...thus I feel that common sense dictates that elementary precautions are adviseable. Your mileage, as they say, may vary...

One reason TO wear underwear is around small children.

They are VERY curious (and "rambuncious) and are liable to "uncover" things while doing something else.. It is also easier to "flash" when playing with them (and forgetting to watch the kilt angles).
Additionally, some parents have issues GETTING kids to WEAR THEIR underwear. In such cases, an adult revealed NOT to be wearing underwear (esp. THEIR parent) works counter to parental efforts.

ALSO, in high/steep stands, it MIGHT we wiser TO wear SOMETHING. OR, when one will be in any elevated situation (or working UNDER a car IN PUBLIC).

Remember, the kilt is a garment, not a costume. Wear it how you want. I frequently wear an undergarment with my kilt because I work with High Schoolers, go to punk shows kilted, and live in an area with high winds. If you want to an undergarment, wear one.

Another thing to keep in mind - some of us wear kilts year-round because they're cooler than pants/shorts in summer and warmer in winter. Wearing underwear reduces the benefits of the kilt's greater ventilation in the summer heat and humidity. And in winter, underwear can actually make the kilt too warm.

Edit: I had this written before children were mentioned. Remembering the old show business adage about children and small animals, wearing underwear would be recommended.

I am easily moved for sympathy for dogs, far more so than for humans, because dogs do not understand. There is no way to explain that you will return, that the vet will make it all better, that they cannot go shooting today because that is not what today is about. They cannot work out that their misery is finite and will some time end, and so their misery is magnified.

I remember reading somewhere about what was "allowed" under the kilt and black briefs were mentioned as the only "allowable" undergarment. I wish I could remeber where I saw that, it struck me as funny though.
