    Unique sporran strap?

I've been thinking about getting a sporran strap to wear in place of my sporran chain for a few reasons- chains seem formal, the leather is black and I'd like to wear brown sometimes, and poeple have spoken of the chains wearing on the kilt.

However, most of the sporran straps look like thin belts. This can go two ways- I could save some money and buy a cheap thin belt. But if I've learned anything on these boards, it that you should never buy an inexpensive general use product to wear with your kilt if you can find something specialized and expensive.

So I have this sporran strap concept and wonder if anybody's ever seen anything like it. I'm thinking of a barell weave (don't know if I've got the termonology right) or cylindrically woven strap, fairly narrow, 4-6 thin strads, made to size with an interesting connector.

Thoughts on where I might get something like this or do I need to learn to weave leather?

Robert (Canuck) at Rkilts makes a great braided leather sporran strap, I have a black one and I really like it.

I'm making some right now. It's a round braid where the chain goes. The leather is bridal leather top stitched with solid hardware. I have a brown one and a black one available

That's basically exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

I have one of the straps from R Kilts and I love it. I'll be ordering another once I decide to get a brown sporran (I might even get it from Robert himself!).

I saw some dog leads, hand made, tubular woven leather, and the thoght came to me that the loops of two of them could be interlinked and the clips attached to a sporan - there were even small medium and large versions.

They were rather nice - and if I wore a sporran I am sure I would have bought some.

These were the 'top of the range' all leather ones, very well made, very glossy and complete with creaks and the smell of new leather.

However, I think that a flat woven strap would be smarter, the tubular ones did look slightly bulky.

I've made several with what's called a mystery braid. Here's one that Iolaus made and posted.

Let me amend that. It's almost what I'm looking for. When you say you are making them- do you mean you are actually making them yourself- and if so, would you do a slight custom job? Like I said above, I'd like one made to size with no belt like appearance- just the connectors on the sporran. So like I saw in the picture, but a solid strap in the back and the whole thing in a custom length?
