Don't feel obligated to wear a sgian dhu. But since I was a kid, I've always carried a pocketknife; so, if I wear scrunched hose with my kilt, a pocketknife or a sgian goes in the sporran. Texas laws allow for sgians dhu and pocketknifes based on the length of the blade, but obviously, one respects 'no tolerance' policies wherever.

LOL! Ok, I see where you're coming from. Most of the time I am wearing the kilt is when I am playing the pipes and there are always people who feel obligated to share something with me, regardless of how well or poorly they are informed. I never want to be rude either. I guess it's a matter of thinking quickly on your feet to come up with the answer that addresses their issue without seeming rude. Most of the time I think I hit that mark, but I suppose there are times where I could have done a better job.
I'll take note when I forget to wear the sgian and see what fire that brings.

I can only think of a handful of times where I HAVE worn a sgain. I dont think it is necessary. Most of the time I feel that the knife is uncomfortable and if I need to cut something, my custom sporrans are more than large enough to accommodate a folder as well as my other daily junk. Wear one if you like but it is not mandatory. If the only negative comment you get is that you arent wearing a sgian, count your lucky stars kilt on!

I wore one to the Meadows Highland Games last October. No one made a remark at all until I was leaving. Then I had someone ask me if I could get in trouble for carrying a "concealed Knife". My first response was, "If you can see it and readily identify it as a knife, it isn't concealed." Then I explained that unless the venue for the games prohibits it, no one cares about the Sgian Dubh here in Va, and that the same went for the odd sword or dirk which we often see at the games.

It really is good fun and practical. I am the kind of person that keeps a lot of 'Stuff' about my person - there is usually something in each of the pockets. One of the things I carry is a Swiss Army Knife. Unfortunately so many of my kilt jackets have non-functioning pockets, so everything goes into the sporran. There just isn't enough room so something had to go - to be replaced by this. The model is called 'The Officer'.

I don’t own a Sgian dubh. Wandering around here with any sort of knife is frowned upon, so I probably wouldn’t wear it except in formal dressed up situations which I’ve gone to maybe 3 of in the last year, That and all the local ones look the same. If I ever buy one it will probably be a sgian x something which will be more useful to me than a blade be it blunt or sharp.
