    What do you call 'em?

My DH keeps calling flashes "flashings," despite my corrections.

I'm thinking of getting my son to cut some aluminum flashing into small stips & I will glue them onto some elastic. And then DH can have his FLASHINGS!

Flashings IS the correct term, however they must not be confused with Flashes.Flashes are worn at the top of kilt hose. Flashings on the other hand are worn beneath the kilt. They are seen only when showing what is worn under the kilt or on very windy days.

Flashing is used on the roof and around chimneys, flashes are used on kilt socks.

Southern Breeze, I like the humor in your description!

Yes, we know the difference, otherwise there wouldn't be a joke.

I can see how reflective flashes could become flashings.

Rather than calling them flashings, since they are aluminum, I might be more inclined to call them fender skirts.

I'm sure there'll be many of us willing to lift his kilt at said DH so he/she wouldn't get confused again !.. but on the other hand maybe your way is better!!

Also on a serious note the correct name for them is garter flashes, if people used the correct name and not just shorten it for convienience sake there would be less confusion.
