    What Tie to wear?

I'm sure this has been discussed so I'll apologize now for not being able to find it in a search (tie is too short and combinations haven't helped). I've only really worn my kilt at casual functions until recently. Now that my new (to me) PC/vest have arrived I need some advice on neck wear.

When is it best to wear - tartan tie, tartan bow tie, black bow tie?

    Thanks in advance.

I would definitely say black bow tie. The kind you tie yourself. Only wee lads of four, tops five and under should wear a clip on. This is my personal feeling though, others are free to differ and I'm sure they will. Yes, my two Lads can wear a tie and tie it as well. My oldest just turned seven and my youngest will turn five in a couple of months. In fact they love to dress up. The lassies start tae flock when they see my lads approaching .

I'm not a fan of tartan ties paired with a kilt anyway. But I'd say a bow tie with pretty much any occasion where you'd be dressing up in a PC.

Just to reiterate, a bow tie with a Prince Charlie jacket is the way to go, preferably black.

Please DO NOT wear a neck tie with a Prince Charlie, despite Sir Sean Connery!

Black self-tie bow tie can be ordered on line from Brooks Brothers, or purchased from any of the larger tux rental/sales shops.

Joseph A. Bank also has self-tie black bow ties.

BeauTies, Ltd in Vermont has a wide selection of bow ties, with solids of many colors. Some are solid, plain, while others have woven patterns. I have a black and silver strip which is very dressy with my PC and wing collar shirt, and I have a green with woven texture which is an exact match for my bottle green Braemar jacket. They aren't the cheapest bow ties on the market, but their quality is superb.
