Who knew unicorns had opposable thumbs?

Last night before debuting my new SWK Black Stewart in public, I rummaged around my jewelry box for something resembling a kilt pin, and found this silly bauble. It's just a cheap brooch, but I thought the colors worked with the tartan.

But now I am in possession of my first bona fide kilt pin, ordered five days ago, having arrived in the mail today from Don McKee's scottishregalia.com.

It is 6cm tall by 3.5cm wide at the widest point, and weighs 35g. The post on the back is very stiff and works by spring action, and it actually takes a fair amount of force to dislodge it from the catch - not excessive, but it feels secure and will not likely pop off easily. The back is inscribed "Don McKee © 2003."

In an earlier post (04-21-2004), bikercelt1 mentioned that this pin had a desgin flaw in the mounting. If this one has a mounting flaw, I'm not sure what it is.

Now, a question: Does the pin go a prescribed distance from apron edge and hem, or is it just what looks right according to the tartan?

Nice looking kilt pin. I think that there are guidelines to wear the kilt pin is worn, at least there was a post somewhat recently asking the same question and a number of people chimed. For me, I never bother to measure, I just place it wear it seems to look right to me. For the XMarks pin, it is usually about the same distance up from the selvedge as in from the fringe. For a sword pin, it is usually up the same distance from the selvedge as the Xmarks, but closer to the edge of the outer apron.

I think it is really presonal preference and how it looks. Remember, the point is to provide some weight to the outer apron in case of wind, so somewhere near the lower, outer edge of the outer apron is fine.

Unless you're in a military unit, a pipe band, or some other organization that requires uniformity, wear the pin where it looks right to you. You can look through pictures to see where others wear their's.

I agree with wearing the pin wear it feels comfortable to you. BTW all the Unicorns in central PA have opposing thumbs, they use them to climb trees At least that what I thought I saw after celebrating kilt night last September

Don't all hooved animals have opposable thumbs? I know my pet mountain goat has them...helps with the kilt sewing!

Rex, I have that same kilt pin on one of my kilts ,it is a heavy bugger! I use an eraser head off of a pencil on the back to keep the pin from sliding. Never had any problems with it coming loose at all.
