Would this be a fashion faux paux?

I've never been good with color coordination because of a slight color-blindness, so in the past I mostly ignored the whole issue, a fact that has frustrated my wife to no end (it's just a "guy thing" I guess). Now I've got a question that I thought I'd throw out here instead of asking her yet again "Honey? Would this match?"

I know "they say" you're not supposed to wear different patterns together, but I saw this cap that I really like, and I think it might work with my Black Stewart SWK. It's not like the patterns will be right next to each other, and the cap is relatively subdued...

Anyway, what I was looking at was the fact that the cap has the yellow, red, and blue of the Blk. Stwrt. ... but it also has a lot of other color as well, which might allow it to match with other kilts in the future.

    What do y'all think?

I don't know a thing about whether it would go or not, but I do know that I lvoe that cap. I have one in the same style, with horizontal stripes in varying fabrics and colours (and I wear it with my FK and denim coat, the colours actually match!)

I agree....I LOVE that cap. I'd probably wear it with a Black Stewart tartan as long as the shirt was a solid color - say black. That could be a very nice combo. Just my two cents worth.

    It might

Iolaus ya gotta keep a couple of things in mind...short of ball caps, most people don't "see" headwear thus the muted colours become a non-issue. Then too, look at the distance between the kilt and the cap, a goodly distance no? A lot of times you can get by with colours that don't exactly match or "go together" if the distance between them is great enough and filled with another colour that is complimentry to both. If it were me, I would get the cap and give it a look, just by the pictures it looks like it would be a match...At the very worst you have a new "fishing hat".

Like the cap, not sure though

Love the cap, not sure about it with the black stewart. Looks like they MIGHT fight each other, but as others have mentioned, the separation might make it a non-issue.

However, I have found that while a hat, or any other accessories, worn with trousers will be ignored, people look much more closely at how I accessorize when I wear the kilt. Maybe because they aren't sure what goes together (neither am I, but I don't tell them that!) and are using what I wear as a way to find out.

I'm going to second KCW. Yes, the colors match, but unless you have a shirt that compliments both and will bridge the difference between the two, I wouldn't put the two of them together.

My thinking is this: your Black Stewart has bright, strong colors. The cap does have the same colors, but much more subdued. If there's such a thing as a "Muted" or "Ancient" Black Stewart - that I could see as a match, colors and hue.

Just came back and looked at this again. Get the hat and wear it, it will go with the kilt just fine. Subdued colours will allow the kilt to hold the attention, will also prevent you from looking like some exotic bird with your comb spread. A shirt of solid colour which compliments both would set things of to a fine display. The combination of complimentry colours shared between the two should make it look like they are ment to be worn together.
Add in hose matched to a minor colour of the kilt with flash mated to a major colour or even to the shirt and there you are...a picture of sartorial perfection.

    Iolaus,

As one who absolutely hates and does not appreciate hats, perhaps I should not get involved - but I am going to throw in my sixpennyworth anyway!

Firstly, I cannot see any colours in the cap that are identical to those in the tartan - similar yes, but not identical - but maybe that is down to my monitor. For that reason, I would think twice about putting the two together. On the other hand, and as has been said by others, there is some distance between the cap and the kilt and, with a plain shirt in the right colour, you might just (in my book) get away with it. What is the "right colour"? Well, I would not opt for black - that will simply accentuate the colours in the tartan and the cap, and will create another problem regarding the colour of your hose, which could not also be black .......... far too much 'black' overall.

My 'right' colour for the shirt would be a light colour - beige, which would also work well for the hose. There are very few tartans indeed that cannot be worn with beige and it is a colour that will subdue, just sufficiently, the other colours you are wearing. Of course, we are talking of casual or informal wear here - beige is not a formal colour ...... and caps are not formal headwear!

A final word on the hose: best to keep them matching the shirt, and wear Black Stewart or maybe plain black flashes. Yet another colour being introduced for the hose alone will be just too much and you will look a mess.

As I have stated so many times, unless one is wearing a kilted uniform or full evening dress, the kilt should have all the attention. It is the star - let it shine! Keep everything else simple and do not allow anything to compete (or clash) with it!

And now it is late and I'm off to bed.........

Black Jacobite shirt. Just do it, man, in the eyes of half the populace a kilt could be considered a fashion faux whatever in the first place, and they sure as heck won't be looking at the hat too hard with such a fine looking Black Stewart tartan to oggle.

Thanks for your thoughts, everybody. I went ahead and ordered the cap. I like the cap for its own sake, and figure that, if it doesn't work with the Black Stewart, it'll still be a good casual cap to wear with trousers.
