    +1

It should look "well broke in", not pressed and "perfect".

That's what scared me about them at first. I got the impression from reading that they were supposed to be absolutely flat on top, and very stiff.

It didn't match up with the bonnets I remember seeing which seemed kind of lumpy and rounded on top, AND NOT STIFF LOOKING.

There were some threads on that a while back.

As far as I know, you tie it just like a bow tie or like tieing shoes.

*I think there are pictures in this thread:
How does one tie a Balmoral bow?

But it might be best to get Jock Scot's advice on this. He might even have a picture. *

    Here you go.

A 15 year old bonnet with the bow that has never been untied.

    Ditto.

A 30 year old bonnet,in almost daily use, with the bow with a stitch in, that has never been untied.

OK i snipped the ribbon, and gave the tie up a go,

Well not so easy, Jock lets just say ill ship my balmoral to your for a quick tie up
no really its a bit of a challenge getting the bow to set just right. I did see a post in the past giving step by step detail about getting the bow just right. I never thought it so hard to tie a small bow. I will keep trying, till then i have been tucking the ribbon inside while its on my head, so as not to offend. from a distance no one can tell that there isnt a bow.

As for shapping the top, i have decided not to. It has been said and i will agree, I will leave the sharp ironed look to those in uniform.

I am off to try the bow one more time and then its off to bed

The bow on your balmoral is tied with just the same knot as you would use to tie a bow tie.
