Highland clearances

Here is a link to a story in the news yesterday when the Scottish First Minister unveiled a statue commemorating the clearances from Helmsdale. There is another similar one at Winnipeg where many of the exiles went.

Very beautiful. The Clearances were truely a horrible thing, and yet they are generally unknown in the US. Irish Blight? yes. Slave trade? yes. Clearances? no. It's a shame.

Hmm. Interesting. They talk about setting up more copies in places like Australia and the USA. I wonder where they'd choose to site it in the US?

It'll end up in some little out of the way park if they site it in Melbourne. All our sculptures seem to end up where no one can see them here. Or outside the casino...

Cape Fear River valley, North Carolina? It could be anywhere from the port of Wilmington, up to around Fayetteville. I nominate Aberdeen.

North Carolina's populating by Scots was at the very earliest part of the Clearances. The movement was more connected to the end of '45 than the Clearances.

The new US was not welcoming to the Scots for a number of reasons so there was not a large number of immigrants. Certain individuals came and settled but not the large numbers.

The main population moved to the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Those who emigrated went to Canada's east coast or the Red River settlement. The largest number went to Australia and used their shepherding skills to bring about the economic collapse of the Scottish sheep industry. Oh, success is the best revenge.

All that being said, there's more statues planned than history has communities so the US should get one somewhere.
