The man's home IS a castle

I wasn't sure whether to post this under "Show us your Pics" or "Kilts in the Media," but since these aren't my photos, I decided it goes here.

Google has announced the availability of newly digitized images from the archives of LIFE magazine. I searched for "kilt" and a good number came up. Here are a couple of my favorites.

The family home since 1726, Capt. Archibald Fletcher mows
the lawn in his kilt while here on leave.

This gentleman has movie-star good looks, but his kilt hasn't held up as well. I'm impressed with his ability to mix patterns. Click the image to go to the Google/LIFE landing page then click again for a blow-up view.

Lord Lovat standing in front of his estate.

In this and other photos of Colonel Lochiel, it appears that he is wearing a non-tartan tweed kilt suit of the sort that Rocky will make for me some day.

This must be the Lovat who is said to have lead his commandos on D-Day while being piped into battle.

Was this the last time the pipes were so used?

That is correct, Simon Fraser himself.

And he DID land on Sword beach with his piper, against specific orders not to do so.

On a side note, I do mix my plaid shirts with my kilts and the look is fantastic I have to say.

Those photos are amazing. Colonel Lochiel just looks like... well, like he'd throttle you easily if you crossed him. I can only hope to look that cool when I'm older.

Mowing the lawn - what a great kilted activity!

Is there any other way, Trefor? I have been mowing my lawns kilted for the past 9½ years.

By the way, has anyone noticed how badly worn/damaged Lord Lovat's kilt was? Maybe he had a contretemps with his mower!

    Take care,
    Ham.

Wonderful photos Rex, Lord Lovat's kilt may be worn, however I'm not sure I'd say anything about it.

Actually, his kilt is in a very faded version of the Cameron tartan, which does tend to look solid in B&W photography. In another thread recently, there was a color picture posted where you could see the tartan, however.
