Ahh, one of our family's favorites. Have it on dvd, and my daughter has a bobbolein tam of the sort that Maureen O'Hara wears in the film

...and we get to see some Irish kilts during the race sequence!

Red Will Danaher: So the IRA's in on this too?

Hugh Forbes: If it were, Red Will Danaher, not a sorched stone of your fine house would be left standing!

    Michaleen Og: A beautiful sentiment!

We're working our way through all of the episodes of Northern Exposure for the benefit of our daughter who wasn't around beck then but who we knew would appreciate the series...

...anyway, just the other day we watched an episode where Maurice Minnifield, the entepreneur ex-astronaut, was going on about John Wayne movies as an example of what it was to be a truly manly American...except in The Quiet Man...that one didn't count and he still didn't like it.

Better he should have mentioned "The Conquerer"!

Anyway, I always like watching Barry Fitzgerald...one of the great character actors...and Quiet Man is Barry at his best.

I had forgotten about Maurice saying that, AA.

Of course, we have to forgive Maurice because in one episode he states:

"These (kilts) belonged to my Grandfather. We were MacAllisters on the distaff side of the family. He was a royal highlander, 42nd regiment, Black Watch."

At the end of the episode, Maurice was shown playing his grandfather's pipes.

    The Quiet Man

A quote from 'The Quiet Man' story in Maurice Walsh's 'Green Rushes'

The quiet man he sate him down,
    and to himself did say,

"I'll sit and look at Shannon's Mouth
    until my dying day:

For Shannon Mouth and Ocean-blue are
    pleasant things to see

But woman's mouth and sky-blue eye!
To hell with them!" said he.

    and from the film:-

"May your days be long and full of happiness,
May your children be many and full of health,
And may you all live in peace
    ................. and freedom"

You know, I really liked The Quite Man. Beautiful scenery. Oh, and one of the few feature films that has Gaelic prominently spoken in it!

I've always said the Quiet Man is my all time favorite film

Coemgen, have you ever seen the Secret of Roan Inish?
Another of our family's favorites, filmed in the northwest of Ireland & features some Gaelic in it as well.
It's based on the novel The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry, by Rosalie K. Fry.
