You can rely on the Royal Navy to do things right. My father used to say;"there is the right way of doings and there is the wrong way of doing things and then, there is the Royal Navy's way of doing things!"

Having been 'awa' like that, I can tell you that anything that brings a bit of home and heritage is a welcome addition. Guid on 'em.

I'm surprised that they couldn't scrape up a Piper from somewhere.

I expect that they did not want to frighten the Taliban.

How cool is that!!??

Too bad they couldn't follow with a showing of the movie The Man Who Would Be King...or a reading of the original Kipling story.

Great story! Leave it to the RM and RN to keep up traditions no matter where they are.

Troops in the field can be quite inventive when it comes to special occasions. I once spent Thanksgiving in the jungles of the Philippines and for some reason it was decided not to provide us with any turkey or the trimmings. I made do with a tin of C-ration turkey (one of the few I'd come across over many years so I figured it was a sign), some grape jelly for cranberry sauce, and I used my hot cocoa mix to make an icing for some c-ration pound cake. It wasn't much but it made the day a bit special and one that I continue to remember each year.
