A secret history of the kilt - from an unusual source

I don't know if it is the current Scottish elections but all of a sudden the English media are carrying Scottish stories - http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion...t-2265753.html - this one by a former British ambassador.

    Best Regards John

Delightful, and with a nice smattering of history as well. Sharing this one on my Facebook page!

    Just A Thought......

I am not a Scot nor do I have Scot ancestry, but I love my kilts and outside of work I wear them constantly. Last night I was at a concert and catching some air at the intermission, invariably a question of two about the kilt came up. I respect the heritage and origins but I wonder if the author's premise still holds:
"I would like to tell you that it immediately marks me out as Scottish". Because I am not sure that the would hold true everywhere and especially as the kilt community grows. We see members from all over the globe here. (And of course in plenty of places my Saffron kilt would not be recognized as Scottish.)
I truly ask this not to be incendiary but just to understand some perspectives.
And I do want to say I do try to learn as much history and understanding as possible on kilts and tartans and not just say of a tartan "I liked the colors".
