    Shock Horror. "Kilt Austrian"

My wife ( She that must be obayed)are going to Austria for a week.Together with the choir she sings with.

I almost split my Ardbeg 17 year old single malt.
Sitting at home here in Norway flipping through this quarters "Living History" (a Norwegian history magazine). To be confronted with this headline.

THE KILT IS NOT AT ALL SCOTTISH.

    I will now translate.

"The Tarten Kilt has been gainning popularity in Austria, after a local archaeologist claim that it was in Austria the kilt was invented. The archeaologist refered to textile found in Molzbichl in Austria where they have apparently found remains of europes oldest kilt. Dated to 320 b.c. This is some 1600 years before the frist known example of a Scottish kilt. However this doesn't supprise the Scottish one bit. Brian Wilton of the the Scottish Tartans Authority says the kilt no doubt belonged to a Kelt. Kelts invaded Scotland at a later date.

Make of this what you will. "long live the Kilt".

I'll be taking mine with me.
    All the Best.....David.

yeah, it definitely would have been a Celt in Austria at that time... but I've read that the ancient Celts wore *gasp* pants.

The Celts were everywhere at that time. No doubt that some artifacts were found. A large number of Celtic metal works have been found throughtout France too.

    Freelander,

I too heard that story somewhere fairly recently, but unsure where. One of my biggest family kilt wearing supporters is my cousins husband from Austria. He thinks that more men should encompass the wearing of the kilt (no he has not taken the step yet). He has smoothed a lot of waters.

Being aware that the Celts were everywhere throughout European history I am not surprised that all places can claim tartans and in particular kilt wearing, and that is what I try to convince people of when I explain to them why they should be kilted.

It's nice to know that somone in your family is so supportive. Maybe you should get him a kilt.

I'm glad You like my Name. And I'm glad my name is not Amadeus because it's much more antique than Wolfgang. I like Mozart as well.
