My wife & I had lunch at a little Irish Pub in the artsy section of town. I went to wash up & as I was coming back a woman at the bar called out “Spin for me.” I stopped, cocked my head inquisitively & smiled. She said “I wanna see the pleat action.” So I obligingly gave a quick spin. She smiled big & said thanks.

About a block away there is a restaurant that specializes in deserts. So we walked there for espresso & a little cake. The place is really nice. It reminds me of a coffee house in Vienna. When we went to pay my wife was standing behind me. I turned to get the debit card from her. I told the girl ehind the counter “We’re married so she keeps all the money. What the girl said next sounded like it was straight from The F-H.C.A.G. “Makes since. It’s obvious who wears the pants in the family.” Everybody, including about 3 that had just stepped in to buy a whole cake, had a good laugh on that one

Hmm never been asked to spin yet, but hey. . . I'm new to kilting. I walked into my local music shop to pick up some speaker cables for a gig this past weekend and as I was browsing I heard a "I'm digging the kilt" come from one of the employees. He had several questions and asked lots of questions that I was more than happy to answer. It was a good outing. I did not wear the kilt to my gig, I really would have but I had a message to give after we finished playing (it was a youth event at a church) and I know that when people are not used to kilts, there is often a lot of attention on the kilt and wearer, which is not where I wanted attention that particular night.

I know exactly what you mean. Church is 1 of only 3 places I am not kilted. Drawing attention to yourself is not proper at church. I am trying to work being kilted into social events at church. That way, eventualy I will attend Mass kilted without being a distraction. Very, very slow process.

I have worn my kilt to church and I dont think that it detracted from the service or the meaning at all, but I will never wear it when I am asked to get up on stage and perform or give a message. Well, not until my congregation realizes that it is just an article of clothing that I wear that shows my pride in my heritage. Nothing more, nothing less.

Being asked to spin has given me a few opportunities to get the pleats action flying high. It's an excellent turn to accidentally flash. The spin request is a friendly inquiry and a quick spin response can answer "the question," in the nicest way I know.


I used to go to church and religious services for many years. These days, if one saw me entering a religious ediface it would likely be in a kilt. My goal is to live true to myself. Not, what someone else would say is a proper attire for attendance in a setting of spiritual enlightenment, growth, sharing, prayer and so much more for my soul journey in this transitory existence.

That is pretty cool Dirk, I have been asked to spin before. Last week while at my Scottish Country Dance class, after I turned and passed one woman I heard her say to her friend "See that's why he wears the kilt." Ah yes a good spin can be fun.
