I think the same rules apply to time pieces as they do to kilts...buy the best you can afford, as they will typically last much longer.
I have been wearing the same Tag Heuer watch since 1991. It is a daily wear watch in my opinion, regardless of the level of activity, including deep sea fishing (salt water), bird hunting (sweat and briers), gardening (dirt), playing with the dogs (slobber), and pub crawling (you name it).
I've only had to change the batteries twice in all these years. I clean it periodically with a toothbrush and jewelery cleaner, and it still looks and feels like new.
