    Cool Operation "Deep Freeze 2008"

Well I'm back from the bottom of the globe. I was sent to Antarticia for Op Deep Freeze '08, I work for the Navy's only active duty Cargo Handling Batallion. We, and some NZ Army cargo handlers went down to offload and backload a supply ship, that provides the "residents" of McMurdo Station and Scott Base with everything they will need for the next year. Everything went well, except for a couple minor injuries (one broken hand, and sprained knee). It was a neat experiance, coming out of a bar at 2 in the morning and it's as sunny as midday. We however didn't get to do the "Polar Plunge", it was held a week befory we got there. I planned to do it kilted, bu I forgot to pack my kilt. (maybe I'll get to return next year) How many people can say they jumped in to the water in Antarticia in a kilt? I'm guessing it is in the single digits, but I plan to be one of the few and proud. Well I've got alot of post to read, and I'll try to post pictures here if I get some, My camera was broke so I have to rely on the kindness of others for photos.

I hope to the heavens I'm never one of them.

Glad you had a good mission. Welcome back.

Welcome, back. Here in Alaska we are just getting the daylight back, and it won't be long until I am out washing my truck at midnight, without having to turn on any artificial lights.

I'm jealous. I tried to get assigned to Deep Freeze back in the late 80's. I was an undesignated deck seaman at the time so I figured the worst they could say was no when I submitted my chit.

The Chief Boatswain's Mate questioned my sanity and parentage in rather colorful terms and tore my chit up right there.

Unless I can find a way to convince the Oregon Army National Guard to send me, my chances don't look very good.

I wonder if there is any need for an artillery officer in Antarctica.
    Simple and crude, but effective.
